Science Superstar Advocates Chemistry to Solve Global Problems
“Chemistry must reorganize to try to solve problems that are important and recognizable to the society that is paying for the research, especially those to do with water, food, health, energy, and environment,” wrote George M. Whitesides, PhD, and John M. Deutch, PhD, in the January 2011 issue of Nature.
Dr. Whitesides expand on this theme during a lecture and panel discussion at the Illinois Institute of Technology’s 2011 Kilpatrick Lecture, “A Chemistry Renaissance,” Sept. 23 at the IIT McCormick Tribune Campus Center, 3300 S. Federal St., Chicago.
The program begins with a 10 am lecture, “Reinventing Chemistry,” followed by a 2 pm student poster session and a 3 pm panel discussion, “Solving Problems or Satisfying Curiosity?” The lecture will focus on Dr. Whiteside’s Nature article, “Let’s Get Practical,” advocating for the reinvention of chemistry for continuing relevance and survival of the discipline (www.nature.com/nature/journal/v469/n7328/full/469021a.html).
“Some of the most interesting problems in science, and many of the most important facing society, need chemistry for their solution. Examples include: understanding life as a network of chemical reactions; interpreting the molecular basis of disease; global stewardship; the production, storage, and conservation of energy and water; and the management of carbon dioxide,” he wrote.
A pioneer in fundamental research, Dr. Whitesides pushes the bounds of interdisciplinary collaboration to establish new fields in science and develop them towards practical applications with the potential to change the everyday world. He is founder of Diagnostics for All, a nonprofit enterprise to provide low-cost, easy to use, postage-stamp-sized diagnostics tools for use in developing countries—a topic on which he delivered a TED Talk (www.ted.com/talks/george_whitesides_a_lab_the_size_of_a_postage_stamp.html).
He is the co-author of more than 1,100 articles, holder of more than 100 patents, and No. 1 on the Hirsh Index of living chemists. The co-founder of 12 companies, including Genzyme, Dr. Whitesides is an adviser to the National Science Foundation, NASA, Department of Defense, and Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He is the winner of the Dreyfus Prize for new materials that have advanced chemistry and its societal benefits.

The concept was refined and perfected into the Chicago-type, fixed trunnion, double leaf, bascule bridge. The influence of the 1909 Plan of Chicago further stimulated innovation on the aesthetics of bridge design, establishing a model for bascule bridges in the 20th century.
