As a benefit for the Illinois Chemical Education Foundation, the Chemical Industry Council of Illinois holds a Scholarship Luncheon with a presentation, “The Chemistry of Nanocrystals.” This talk will explore the interaction of colloidal nanostructures, specifically, quantum dots, with the organic ligands adsorbed to their surfaces, and how to use surface chemistry to enhance the processes within these particles that are desirable for their application in solar energy conversion. On May 18, the American Chemical Society Chicago awards the Willard Gibbs Medal to Professor Mark A. Rater, Northwestern University. Professor Ratner will present “From Rectifying to Energy: Some Reflections,” describing some ideas about how current moves through molecules, discussing some of the ways that theory and experiment can come together to help us develop photovoltaic devices, devices that can lead to control of our energy future using molecules in an intelligent and interesting way. 6 pm at Casa Royale, 783 Lee St., Des Plaines.
