On January 11 - 13, the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance holds its annual Midwest Energy Solutions Conference to raise awareness and reinforce the importance of energy efficiency in the Midwest. A preliminary special event, the Midwest Energy Efficiency Summit takes place January 11 from 8:30 am - 1 pm. Attendance is free and includes three panel discussions that will examine the technical potential for industrial energy efficiency improvement. Start off the year with a microscope tune-up. McCrone Research Institute offers its annual course, Microscope Cleaning, Maintenance & Adjustment on January 16 - 17. Get an introduction to how the microscope works, various schools of thought on lens cleaning, how to adjust for proper illumination (Köhler Illumination) and tricks of the trade. Return home with a manual and a working knowledge of how to clean and adjust the microscope. Lectures will be followed by hands-on adjustment and cleaning. Students are encouraged to bring their own microscopes to class. Cost is $900. The class will be held from 8 am - 5 pm at McCrone Research Institute, 2820 S. Michigan Ave, Chicago.

The Chicago Regional Future City Competition takes place on January 21, from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Student Center East, 750 S. Halsted St., Chicago. 6th through 8th grade students design future cities with simulation software, build scale models, write essays and give oral presentations on their city’s design and compete for regional prizes, including a trip to Washington, DC for the national competition. Jan. 31: Chicago Council on Science and Technology: Sustainable Energy: Fact or Fiction. 5 pm at the Illinois Institute of Technology, McCormick Tribune Campus Center, McCloska Auditorium, 3201 S. State St., Chicago. In this talk, three criteria describing increasingly strict features of sustainability will be presented and applied to evaluate the alternatives to oil and carbon dioxide emission, such as tapping unused energy flows in sunlight and wind, producing electricity without carbon emissions from clean coal and high efficiency nuclear power plants, and replacing oil with biofuel or electricity. $10 with advance registration; $15 at the door; $5 for students.

Jan. 31: Illinois Section of the American Water Works Association: Webinar: Measuring Chlorine Residual. 10 - 11 am. This presentation will cover the important considerations in accurate measurement of free and total chlorine residuals by
the DPD colorimetric method and amperometric titration for portable and laboratory measurements and on-line measurements with either the colorimetric or amperometric probes. Measurement of residuals for chloramination also will be discussed including measurement of monochloramine, free ammonia and total ammonia. Free for Illinois AWWA members; $15 for non Illinois AWWA members; $25 for nonmembers.
