This February is a good month for family-friendly, kid-centered and even a student-run event. Illinois Computing Educators hold its Students Involved with Technology Conference on February 18, from 8 am to 2 pm at sites in DeKalb, East Moline, Charleston, Lincolnshire, Normal and Woodridge. This for-students, by-students conference will expose young “digital natives” to a wide variety of technology experiences and opportunities through more than 50 breakout sessions throughout the day. It is open to all interested students in grades 3 through 12. Cost is $25. Registration is required.

In honor of Engineers Week, several area engineering organizations are sponsoring an Expo on February 25, from 10 am to 3:30 pm at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Rice Campus, 201 E. Loop Road, Wheaton. This free event is for children of all ages and features everything from model airplanes and a wind tunnel exhibit, to lasers, robots, bicycle power, and hands-on activities with ZOOM, Design Squad, SCARCE, SciTech, and the DuPage Children’s Museum. See interactive displays, exhibits and presentations from engineering societies, education, business, and government that promote an active interest in learning about engineering principles.

On February 26, the Fermilab Education Office presents its Wonders of Science Show. This fast-paced series of demonstrations on chemical and physical phenomena will involve you and your young scientists mentally and at times, physically. The presenters are master science teachers who have been recognized locally and nationally for their abilities to reach young minds. In addition, each family with at least one child will receive a kit of materials that will enable them to continue their science explorations at home or in the classroom. Cost is $4. Recommended for children ages 7 to 12. The program takes place from 1 to 2:30 pm at Fermilab, Wilson Hall, Ramsey Auditorium, Batavia.
