On December 1st, the Chicago Council on Science and Technology hosts a two part program, “The Science and Policy of Obesity.” In the first part, Chicago-based scientists will present the current science of obesity, describing the various ways obesity harms the body, how our food choices can impact our health and the different health-determinant patterns locally and nationally. In the second part, a panel of experts will discuss the latest research informing obesity interventions, as well as challenges and the potential roles played by government, community organizations, private industry and individuals to prevent and combat obesity and the long-term implications of this epidemic. 3 - 7:30 pm at Northwestern University, Chicago Campus, Hughes Auditorium, 303 E. “An Inside-Out Look at the Bean - A Behind the Scenes Look at the Construction of the Cloud Gate at Millennium Park” will be hosted by the ASM International Chicago Regional Section on December 13th. The talk will begin with the concept of the structure, technically named the “Anish Kapoor Cloudgate Sculpture,” and will trace the history of the design and fabrication of this sculpture, which draws millions of tourists to Chicago annually. Jan. 16 - 17: McCrone Research Institute: Microscope Cleaning, Maintenance & Adjustment. 8 am - 5 pm at 2820 S. Michigan Ave. The student will be introduced to how the microscope works, various schools of thought on lens cleaning, how to adjust for proper illumination (Köhler Illumination) and tricks of the trade. The student will return home with a manual and a working knowledge of how to clean and adjust the microscope. Lectures will be followed by hands-on adjustment and cleaning. Students are encouraged to bring their own microscopes to class. Cost is $900.
