Science Cafe
Northwestern University's Science Cafe is an informal forum for the discussion of important and interesting scientific issues. Junior Science Cafe offers a similar forum for students in grades 6-12, their parents, grandparents, and teachers. In March, Science Cafe presents a brief talk and discussion on "The Evolution of Consciousness." Professor Malcolm MacIver of Northwestern's departments of biomedical engineering and mechanical engineering, will lead the forum at the Firehouse Grill, 750 Chicago Ave., Evanston. The program runs from 6:15 to 7:45 pm. The program abstract states: "We last shared an ancestor with plants about two billion years ago. Since then, we animals have come up with a remarkable ability that plants seem far from obtaining: the ability to be aware, and to plan. What evolutionary conditions were important to the development of planning and awareness in animals? Why hasn’t it arisen in plants? What are the limitations to our consciousness that may result from its evolutionary history?"
On March 20, Junior Science Cafe 1 presents "We’re Being Invaded!" with Jim Robinett, Vice President, Animal Collections, at the Shedd Aquarium. The program announcement states: "Asian carp have become big news in the Midwest. But what’s the story with them? How did they get here, and where are they going? This invasion has become the concern of not only local environmentalists, as well as state and federal officials, but it is even being considered by the US Supreme Court! Learn why these fish are such a problem, and what the options might be for fixing this challenging dilemma. As with most controversial issues there are multiple sides to the discussion. It’s much more than just another big fish in a small pond!"
The program is at Boocoo Cafe, 1823 Church St., Evanston, from 11 am to 12:30 pm. Admission is free admission, and pizza will be served.
Junior Science Cafe 2 meets on March 19 to discuss "Visual Illusions and Your Brain." Professor Steve Franconeri of Northwestern's Department of Psychology leads the discussion. "You might not think about it, but there are actually many ways of interpreting the image that enters your eye," the program states. "An interpretation is usually chosen for you automatically by your visual system, guided by hidden assumptions about the way the world works. Clever illusions break these assumptions and at the same time provide a look 'under the hood' of visual system. In other words, what you see is not necessarily what you get. Find out why your favorite optical illusions work!" The event runs from 4 to 5:15 pm at the Loft, Evanston Public Library, 1703 Orrington Ave., Evanston. Again, the program is open to students grades 6 - 12, their parents, grandparents, and teachers. Free admission. Snacks will be served
