Chicago Women in Architecture Scholarships
Chicago Women in Architecture awards a scholarship to a female graduate or undergraduate student in an accredited architecture program in Illinois. Students must be scheduled to graduate in either December 201 or May 2011. Applicants must submit a studio project, essay, resume, and letter of recommendation from a university professor. Application deadline is Jan. 29. For details go to www.cwarch.org/HTML/scholarship.htm, or contact Deidre Colgan, Scholarship Chair, at (312) 580-1050.
Role of the Expert Witness
Imagine yourself as a juror faced with the responsibility of deciding the fate of a case brought before the courts involving a product failure, a chemical explosion, an environmental contamination, or a toxic fatality. You spend days hearing from both sides, plaintiff and defense, presenting their case. When the case involves science or engineering, the courts rely on experts, who by virtue of their education, training and technical experience in the forensics sciences and the law, can help establish the scientific facts of the case and provide the courts with opinions regarding the evidence.
While the role of courtroom experts and forensic scientists has gained much attention on television shows such as "Crime Scene Investigation (CSI)," the real life of scientific experts in the courtroom requires a unique set of technical, legal and communication skills. Evidence and scene preservation techniques, sample collection and analysis, documentation and demonstrations are essential elements of the fact-finding process. Chain of custody, spoliation of evidence, and the Daubert standard are challenged throughout the process.
Michael G. Koehler, chief executive officer of Packard Engineering, presents "Chemists and Engineers in the Courtroom" at a joint meeting of the American Chemical Society Chicago Chapter and American Institute of Chemical; Engineers Chicago. He will discuss many of the approaches and techniques used in the forensic sciences and the legal obligations associated with the role of expert witness, as well as the impact of technology on the role of chemists and engineers in the courtroom.
A social hour begins at 5:30 pm, dinner at 6:30 pm, and presentation at 7:45 pm at the European Crystal Banquet Center, Parlor BC, 519 Algonquin Road, Arlington Heights. Cost is $35 for members; $37 for nonmembers; and $20 for students, retired, or unemployed. Register at http://membership.acs.org/C/Chicago/register.html or contact chicagoacs@ameritech.net, (847) 391-9091 by noon, Jan. 18.
Complexity in Nature
Chaos, stability, simplicity and complexity: These concepts will be explored during the Chicago Council on Science and Technology's Heilborn Symposium Jan. 6 - 8. Three afternoon lectures will be intended for a general audience, and three morning lectures are technical. The afternoon lectures are: "Chaos," "The Stability of the Solar System," and "Simplicity and Complexity." These lectures begin at 4 pm at Northwestern University's Technological Institute, Ryan Auditorium, 2145 Sheridan Road, Evanston.
On Jan. 6, Dr. James A. York, Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Maryland, will present "Chaos." In his abstract he states: "Few scientists recognized until the last 30 years that scientific environments in which precise rules govern change can be quite unpredictable in the long run. It is not the complexity of our life that causes chaos but rather its instability. Meteorologist Edward Lorenz, one of the founders of chaos theory, suggested in 1960 that the flap of a butterfly wing in Brazil might set off a tornado in Texas, implying that we can never know all the factors that determine our weather. Computer models have greatly helped us understand how pervasive chaos is throughout science. But I continue to wonder, if nearly all scientists missed this pervasive phenomenon, what else might we all be missing now?"
Dr. Jacques Laskar, Director of Research, Astronomie et Systémes Dynamiques, Institut de Mécanique Céleste, Observatoire de Paris, presents "The Stability of the Solar System" on Jan. 7. Since its formulation by Newton, the question of the stability of the solar system has fascinated astronomers and mathematicians for more than three centuries. Although the past centuries most efforts have been devoted to searches for proofs of stability of the solar system, recent numerical results show the contrary. New technologies reveal collisional trajectories are possible for all planets of the inner solar System and help answer the question: "Is the solar system stable?"
The Jan. 8 lecture, "Simplicity and Complexity," will be presented by Nobel Prize winner in physics Dr. Murray Gell-Mann. Dr. Gell-Mann is Distinguished Fellow at the Santa Fe Institute as well as the Robert Andrews Millikan Professor Emeritus at the California Institute of Technology. In 1969 he received the Nobel Prize in physics for his work on the theory of elementary particles. A brief summary of this lecture states: "Complexity can be examined and defined through ordinary conversations and general scientific discourse. The effective complexity of an entity depends on the level of detail at which the entity is described. Why does complexity seem to keep increasing in a variety of situations? As an example, we can examine the anthropological concept of social complexity. Does it make sense to place pre-industrial societies on a scale of social complexity? Do such societies acquire certain important traits in a more or less regular matter?"
The morning technical lectures are at 11 am. For more information, visit http://www.heilbornsymposium.northwestern.edu/index.html.
